Tip #1: How long should the tablecloth drop be?
Many top linen manufacturers recommend a drop of 6 to 12 inches from the edge of the table to the end of the tablecloth.
Warning: Full-length tablecloths on guest-seated tables may cause discomfort as guests may struggle with excess fabric around their legs.
Tip #2: How to Calculate Tablecloth Drop
Most standard tables are 30 inches in height. To calculate the drop of a tablecloth:
- Subtract the table width from the tablecloth width.
- Example: A 5’ round table (60”) with a 90” round tablecloth:
90” – 60” = 30”
- Example: A 5’ round table (60”) with a 90” round tablecloth:
- Divide the difference by 2 to get the drop on all sides.
- 30” ÷ 2 = 15” drop
Tip #3: How to Hide Table Legs Using a Square Tablecloth
Many hotels and reception venues use square tablecloths on round tables to achieve better coverage and legroom.
- Example:
- 90” x 90” Square Tablecloth on a 5-foot round table
- More affordable and hides table legs better than a standard 90” round tablecloth.
Comparison:
90” x 90” Square Tablecloth on a 5-ft Round Table
Less expensive
Covers table legs
- 60” x 120” Rectangle Tablecloth on an 8-ft Table
(Standard coverage for rectangular tables.)
